A collaboration with harpist and artistic director Sophie Steiner, organized by the Yonaguni Town Board of Education in partnership with the Yonaguni Town Library.
The visit had two parts: a public concert at the Town Library, and a workshop and performance tour through all five of the island's elementary and middle schools.
▍The public concert

Live painting on large washi paper, alongside Sophie's harp. The performance also incorporated the sanshin, weaving the harp's European voice with Okinawa's traditional three-stringed instrument. Open to anyone who wanted to come listen; painting participants from elementary age and up registered in advance, with adults welcome.
▍The schools tour
Sophie visited all five elementary and middle schools on Yonaguni, giving talks about her career and performing for the students — many of whom had never heard a harp before. The harp is said to be the world's second-oldest instrument; on a remote island in Japan, hearing one performed live by an artist of Sophie's caliber is a rare experience.
The harp Sophie brought to Yonaguni was mid-sized — the size that could be transported to a remote island. Her usual instrument is much larger.
